Nigeria Plans Local Satellite Component Manufacturing Alongside NigComSat-2A Build
Nigeria's next satellite programme now includes a plan for local component manufacturing, representing a move toward sovereign deeptech capability beyond contracting foreign builders. The development extends the NigComSat-2A programme, for which Thales Alenia Space secured the build contract on September 17.
NigComSat-2A: assembling parts isn't the same as building a space industry
Nigeria is planning to assemble satellite ground terminals locally — the antennas and dishes that talk to satellites — rather than importing them whole. That's a real step beyond just owning a satellite.
But the prior take on this programme is worth keeping in view: NigComSat-1R launched in 2011 and, by the agency's own admission, only 7% of its broadband capacity was ever actually used. You can build the infrastructure. The harder part is building the demand.
Assembly tied to one government programme is not yet an industry. The question is whether this facility outlives the contract that created it.
