The figure marks a defining scale milestone for telecom-led digital finance on the continent, with Vodacom's results also prompting the group to scale back its dividend policy to redirect capital toward growth.

Vodacom processed $548 billion through mobile phones in twelve months. That number is bigger than the entire GDP of most African countries, moving through handsets, not branches, reaching people who have never held a bank account.
The dividend cut is the tell. Vodacom just lowered its payout to shareholders — from 75% to 65% of earnings — to fund more of this. A company that has spent years marketing itself as a reliable income stock for pension funds is now saying: the growth opportunity in financial services is more valuable than the cheque we promised you.
That is not a telecoms company optimising its network. That is a financial services business reclassifying itself in real time — and betting the continent's unbanked population is the biggest growth story left on the JSE.
