African ClimateTech Funding Hits $1.5bn, Overtakes Fintech for First Time
African ClimateTech investment is surpassing fintech to become the continent's largest VC sector, even as structural barriers persist.
African climate technology startups have attracted $1.5 billion in venture capital funding, surpassing fintech to become the continent's largest VC sector for the first time. The milestone marks a structural shift in where African startup capital is concentrating.
Climate Capital: the missing rung that $1.5bn can't fix
The $1.5bn headline is real. But the report quietly names the actual problem: most African climate startups aren't failing because their technology doesn't work. Solar panels, battery systems, carbon tools — all proven. What's missing is working capital, debt facilities, procurement guarantees.
VC can't provide those. It's the wrong instrument entirely.
So the sector hits a record and hundreds of founders still can't scale — not because investors lost interest, but because the financial infrastructure they actually need to grow simply doesn't exist yet.
