FNB, Absa and Nedbank Join Open USD Stablecoin Project
First National Bank, Absa, and Nedbank have joined the Open USD stablecoin project, marking a significant institutional embrace of programmable money infrastructure by three of South Africa's largest banks. The move signals growing appetite among major African financial institutions for stablecoin payment rails.
Open USD: South Africa's big banks just bet on money without humans
FNB, Absa and Nedbank joining a 140-company consortium — alongside Visa, Mastercard and BlackRock — to build a dollar stablecoin designed for AI agents to pay each other automatically isn't a crypto story. It's a bet on what commerce looks like when the buyer isn't a person.
The specific gap being filled is real: card networks can't profitably process a 32-cent transaction, so AI agents that need to pay for a data feed or an API call mid-task hit a wall. Open USD and the x402 protocol are built to remove that wall.
Three South African banks quietly on that partner list means African institutions are shaping the plumbing, not just adopting it later. That's worth noticing.
