Vercel Acquires Egyptian AI Infrastructure Startup Stakpak in African M&A Expansion
US developer platform Vercel has acquired Stakpak, an Egyptian AI infrastructure startup, described as part of a rapid sequence of acquisitions of African-founded AI companies within days. The deals are being read as a signal that major US technology firms are actively targeting African engineering talent through M&A.
African AI: Vercel is building a pattern, not making a one-off bet
Vercel has now acquired two African-built AI startups within days of each other — Better Auth from Ethiopia, Stakpak from Egypt. That stops being coincidence and starts being a strategy.
The uncomfortable part: both founders had already relocated before Vercel found them. The talent is African; the value accrues elsewhere.
When a $9.3 billion platform hunts this deliberately, the continent's builders need to ask whether they're being discovered — or quietly harvested.
