MTN Ghana Wins $202 Million Spectrum for Imminent 5G Rollout
MTN Ghana has won 700MHz and 3GHz spectrum licences valued at $202 million, clearing the path for imminent 5G service deployment in West Africa's second-largest economy. The spectrum acquisition positions MTN alongside state-owned Telecel Ghana, which separately received a 5G licence with a December rollout deadline, intensifying competition in the country's mobile market.
Ghana 5G: the 40% premium paid off
Back in July, Ghana's regulator added a 40% pricing premium to MTN's 5G bid — precisely to stop the company that already holds most of the country's mobile internet connections from buying dominance in the next network generation too.
MTN paid it anyway. $202 million, absorbed into its cash flow plans without flinching.
The result is actually what the regulator was aiming for: two independent 5G networks launching at roughly the same time, one private and one part state-owned. That's a healthier starting point than the monopoly NGIC experiment that collapsed after completing 16 of 50 required sites.
The real test is whether Telecel — smaller, with a December deadline — can actually build fast enough to keep MTN honest.
