Six African Fintechs Tracking Toward IPO, Mostly on Offshore Exchanges
Six African fintech companies are tracking toward public listings, with most expected to list on offshore exchanges rather than domestic African markets. The cohort is being watched by continental investors as a gauge of the African fintech capital-markets pipeline.
Africa's IPO Wave: the continent built it; the world will own it
Six African fintechs heading toward public markets sounds like a coming-of-age moment for the ecosystem.
But five of the six are listing offshore — London, Hong Kong, wherever the deeper pools are. Airtel Money just priced on the London Stock Exchange at $7 billion. PalmPay is eyeing Hong Kong. MTN MoMo is routing its biggest markets to international investors.
MNT-Halan, listing in Cairo, is the lonely exception — and it's worth asking why it can afford to be one when businesses with 54 million customers across 14 markets cannot.
African savers, African pension funds, African retail investors: largely locked out of the wealth being created by the infrastructure they use every day. The listings are real wins. Who captures them is the uncomfortable question.
