Nigerian Defence-Tech Startup Terra Industries Closes $52M Seed Round, Opens London Office
Nigerian defence-technology startup Terra Industries has closed a $52 million seed round — the largest ever for a defence-tech company on the continent — after raising an additional $18 million to reach that figure. The company is also opening a London office as part of its expansion plans.
Terra Industries: $52m raised, and already heading for the door
Terra's pitch to African governments is about sovereignty — stop buying Chinese and European black-box systems you can't service or control locally.
It's a genuinely compelling argument. And the money backs it: $52 million at seed stage, a 34,000-square-foot factory in Ghana, contracts with West African militaries.
But the company's next moves are London, San Francisco, and Washington DC. The customers may be African. The centre of gravity is drifting elsewhere — fast.
That tension is the whole story. Can a company credibly sell sovereignty as its core product while organising itself around Western capitals? And who, ultimately, does the value accrue to?
