Terra Industries Closes $52M Seed Round, Africa's Largest Ever for Defence-Tech
Nigerian defence-technology startup Terra Industries has closed a $52 million seed round — reportedly the largest ever for a defence-tech company on the continent — after raising an additional $18 million to reach that figure. The company is also opening a London office as part of its expansion plans.
Terra Industries: manufacturing in Africa, deciding in London
Terra's CEO says critical infrastructure is "best protected by systems designed for these environments and built in the regions they protect." That's the sovereignty pitch — and it's a good one.
So it matters that the London office is justified, in the same breath, by access to "world-class operations and AI talent." Manufacturing stays in Africa; the people making the big calls are heading somewhere else.
The Miva University partnership shows Terra knows it needs to build African defence-tech talent from scratch. But if the engineering leadership is being recruited in London, that pipeline feeds a branch office, not the core.
