Ripple and Circle Both Back Flutterwave as Stablecoin Infrastructure Race Centres on Africa
Both Ripple and Circle have now invested in Flutterwave within weeks of each other, with Circle's stake linked to USDC stablecoin settlement integration announced the previous day. The dual backing positions Flutterwave at the centre of a global stablecoin distribution contest playing out on African payment rails. Tether, Circle, and Ripple are all simultaneously backing African fintechs as the continent's payment infrastructure gains strategic significance for dollar-denominated digital currency adoption.
Flutterwave: the stablecoin-agnostic stance is about to be tested
Ripple took a stake at a $3.2 billion valuation last month. Now Circle has invested too — and both deals come with integration commitments, not just cheques.
Flutterwave says it's stablecoin-agnostic: it'll run RLUSD for Ripple and USDC for Circle, letting merchants pick whichever works. That sounds like flexibility. It's also a position that gets harder to hold as the financial weight behind each stablecoin grows and each backer quietly expects priority.
Two global companies don't invest in the same infrastructure play to share the shelf equally.
