Flutterwave Embeds USDC Settlement With Circle Ventures Backing
Flutterwave has secured investment from Circle Ventures, with the deal linked to integrating USDC stablecoin settlement into its African payments infrastructure. The backing follows Ripple's investment in Flutterwave disclosed earlier, placing the Nigerian fintech at the centre of the global stablecoin distribution contest.
Flutterwave: two backers, one infrastructure, a collision coming
Ripple and Circle both hold stakes in Flutterwave now — and both deals carry integration commitments, not just passive capital.
The uncomfortable arithmetic: USDC (Circle's stablecoin) and RLUSD (Ripple's) are direct competitors for the same settlement moment. Flutterwave's 'merchant picks whichever works' position sounds clean until you consider that Circle just bought the right to shape the roadmap from the inside, exactly as Ripple did a month ago.
Two global stablecoin giants don't co-invest in African infrastructure out of generosity. One of them will eventually expect to be the default. When that pressure lands, Flutterwave's real negotiating power is the $40 billion in transactions it already owns — not the flexibility it's promising today.
