African Union Launches Continent's First Sovereign Credit Rating Agency
The African Union has formally launched the African Credit Rating Agency, positioning it as a continental alternative to established Western rating agencies for sovereign borrowers and development finance institutions. The agency is designed to challenge the dominance of global rating firms whose assessments have historically shaped African debt costs and investor appetite.
AfCRA: credibility can't be declared, only earned
The most honest thing said at AfCRA's launch came from a former Nigerian vice president: it can't just be a nationalistic agency.
That is the whole problem in one sentence. The AU approved this body in 2017. It is headquartered in Mauritius, deliberately not owned by African governments, and mandated to rate sovereign, corporate and local-currency debt independently. The architecture is designed to pre-empt the obvious charge. But architecture isn't credibility.
Credibility is what a rating agency does when a government that helped build it gets a score it doesn't like.
