Airtel Money Begins Trading in London at $7 Billion Valuation
Airtel Money has launched its public offering on the London Stock Exchange at a valuation of $7 billion, following pricing at £1.96 per share confirmed on 2 October. The listing marks one of Africa's largest-ever mobile money public offerings and establishes a public market benchmark for the continent's second-largest mobile money network.
Airtel Money IPO: the $7 billion number finally means something — just not what you'd hope
Public markets have now spoken three times on this deal: $10 billion, then $7 billion on paper, and today an actual share price that makes it real.
But trading doesn't change the structure. This is still existing shareholders — TPG, Mastercard, Qatar Holding — cashing out. No fresh capital flows into Airtel Money's 13 African markets. The listing is a liquidity event for early backers, dressed in the language of a milestone.
For the ecosystem, the benchmark is genuinely useful. A public price on Africa's second-largest mobile money network is data investors and founders can use. The uncomfortable part is what that price confirms: international public markets valued $245 billion in annual transactions at $7 billion. That's the ceiling, for now.
