MTN Nigeria Becomes First African Telco to Reach 100 Million Subscribers in a Single Market
MTN Nigeria has crossed 100 million subscribers, making it the first telco on the continent to reach that threshold in a single national market. The milestone marks a historic scale benchmark for Africa's largest telecoms market.
MTN Nigeria: 100 million subscribers, one uncomfortable number inside it
Half of Nigeria's 195 million mobile users are now on MTN. One network, one country, 52% market share — that's not dominance, that's a different category of thing.
And the data story inside it is sharper still: 84 million of those subscribers use MTN for mobile internet, at a time when data is already running the company. The milestone is real. So is the concentration risk it represents for everyone building digital services in Nigeria.
When a single operator controls the pipe that more than half the country depends on, every startup, every fintech, every content platform is essentially a tenant. That's worth holding in mind alongside the celebration.
