Airtel Uganda and Starlink Launch Africa's Second Satellite-to-Mobile Service
Airtel Uganda has commercially launched a Starlink satellite-to-mobile service, making it Africa's second such deployment and extending connectivity to remote populations not served by terrestrial networks. The Airtel-Starlink partnership is being described as a replicable model for rural connectivity across the continent.
Satellite Mobile: the handset is now the bottleneck
No dish, no specialist kit — just a compatible phone pointed at the sky. That's the genuinely striking thing about what Airtel and Starlink have built in Uganda: the infrastructure problem is largely solved.
But the AI chip crunch is pushing entry-level smartphone prices up at exactly the moment this service needs people to own compatible handsets. In Sub-Saharan Africa, a basic internet-capable device already costs the poorest fifth of the population the equivalent of three-quarters of a monthly income — and that number is climbing.
The satellite now reaches the village. Whether the village can afford the phone to receive it is a different problem entirely.
