MNT-Halan Files for Cairo Stock Exchange Listing as Egyptian Fintech Unicorn Eyes Public Market
Egyptian fintech unicorn MNT-Halan has filed for a listing on the Cairo Stock Exchange, having evolved from a ride-hailing app into a lender with a reported $15.5 billion loan book. The IPO filing is being described as a landmark African fintech exit signal.
MNT-Halan IPO: the National Bank of Egypt's stake is the real story
The filing itself is landmark enough — Egypt's most valuable fintech, built on $15.5 billion in loans to people most banks ignored, heading for a public listing on the Cairo Stock Exchange.
But the detail that changes the meaning is this: Al Ahly Capital, the private equity arm of the National Bank of Egypt — a bank that holds 38 per cent of the country's deposits and lends to 20 million customers — took an equity stake in MNT-Halan just three months before the IPO filing.
That's not just a vote of confidence. Egypt's largest bank has now tied its name to a non-bank lender that built its business by reaching the customers the banking system left out. The establishment didn't just accept this company — it bought in.
For founders building in markets where regulators and legacy institutions treat fintech as a threat to manage rather than a gap to fill, that alignment is worth more than the listing itself.
