Google Cloud Africa Summit launches five AI initiatives including Applied AI Lab with Novastar

An AI lab in Ghana and a $1 million storytelling programme are the announcements getting shared. But the thing that will actually matter is a connectivity hub in South Africa's Eastern Cape, linking the continent to Australia and India via subsea cable.

That's physical infrastructure — the kind that makes everything else possible. Better AI tools mean nothing if the underlying connection is slow or breaks.

Google building that layer, not just funding apps on top of it, is the real signal here.

Google didn't have to build this hub in one of South Africa's poorest provinces. It could have landed in Cape Town or Joburg and nobody would have blinked.

Choosing the Eastern Cape — deliberately, by their own account — means the physical gateway where Africa connects to Australia and India sits in a place that has historically watched infrastructure get built elsewhere.

That's not charity. It's a proof of concept: that connectivity investment and economic development don't have to point in opposite directions. Whether the jobs and spillovers actually materialise for Eastern Cape communities, not just for the companies routing traffic through it, is the question worth tracking.

The Applied AI Lab in Accra — run jointly by Google and Novastar Ventures, a fund focused on African markets — pairs local founders directly with Google researchers and early access to frontier models. Applications close August 31. That's a real thing, not a brochure.

But Novastar's portfolio skews toward later-stage, commercially proven businesses. So the honest question is whether this lab reaches the scrappy, first-time founder in Kumasi or Kano, or whether it gravitates toward the startups already polished enough to catch a VC's eye.

The lab's value is precisely in that access to Google's researchers. If the selection filters for who already looks fundable, the gap it could close just stays open.
