That's not scepticism about the cloud region itself, which is real and already running. It's a reminder that economic impact forecasts released at a company's own marketing event are optimistic by design.
Vodacom and Discovery are genuine anchors — large enough to move real numbers. But the 315,000 jobs figure will only mean something if the gains reach outside that circle. The question nobody asked from the stage is whether the founders in Durban or the small business in Soweto are in that number, or just the headline.
