Airtel Africa and Starlink Launch Africa's First Commercial Satellite-to-Mobile Service in DRC
Airtel Africa and SpaceX's Starlink have commercially launched Africa's first satellite-to-mobile phone service in the Democratic Republic of Congo, using Direct-to-Cell technology to deliver connectivity to standard handsets without specialist hardware. The service was first reported on August 15 and is now confirmed across multiple sources, including one outlet that attributes the first-in-Africa designation to Uganda, though the DRC launch is the primary event.

The DRC launch is live. The more telling detail is what Airtel's CEO said immediately after: the rest of the rollout depends on country-by-country regulatory approvals across thirteen other markets.
That means Airtel's 173.8-million-customer footprint is now, in effect, a lobbying operation for Starlink — a company that can't get a licence in South Africa because it refuses to meet a local ownership requirement, and has never applied to Icasa at all.
Every approval Airtel wins is one Starlink couldn't have won alone. The DRC isn't just a commercial launch — it's the first proof point in a market-by-market negotiation that SpaceX is quietly running through a partner with local relationships it doesn't have itself.
