Airtel and Starlink Expand Africa's First Satellite-to-Mobile Service in DRC
Airtel Africa and Starlink have launched Africa's first satellite-to-mobile phone service in the Democratic Republic of Congo, using Direct-to-Cell technology to deliver connectivity without specialist hardware. The deployment, first reported on August 15, resets expectations for rural coverage across the continent where conventional infrastructure has historically struggled to reach underserved populations.
Satellite Coverage: the regulatory queue is the real constraint now
The technology question is essentially settled. A standard Android phone, a clear sky, and an Airtel SIM is all it takes — no dish, no new hardware, no specialist kit.
But Airtel's own CEO flagged the next bottleneck in the same breath as the launch announcement: expansion across Airtel's other thirteen African markets depends on country-by-country regulatory approvals, several of which aren't in place yet.
The DRC deployment is real. The ceiling-lift, though, happens market by market — and the speed of that is now a question for regulators, not engineers.
