Airtel Africa and SpaceX's Starlink have launched Africa's first commercial satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of Congo, using Starlink's Direct-to-Cell technology to deliver connectivity to mobile users without specialist hardware. The deployment resets expectations for rural coverage across the continent, where conventional network infrastructure has historically struggled to reach underserved populations.
Satellite Coverage: no dish, no tower — the DRC just changed the baseline
The detail that matters here isn't the partnership — it's the constraint it removes. Starlink's Direct-to-Cell works on a standard LTE Android handset. No satellite dish, no specialist kit, just a compatible phone and a clear view of sky.
In a country where rural provinces like Tshuapa have 4G coverage of just 14%, that is a genuinely different proposition. The economics that made tower deployment unviable in remote DRC — the size, the geography, the dispersed populations — simply don't apply to a satellite overhead.
