MTN Spins Out Africa Data Hub as Continent-Wide AI Infrastructure Play With UAE Backing
MTN is spinning out a dedicated Africa Data Hub entity, backed by UAE capital, to position itself as a continent-wide AI infrastructure operator. The move extends the group's previously reported commitment to a 150-megawatt first phase of AI-ready data centres across South Africa and Nigeria into a formal corporate structure.

A joint venture can be wound down. A separately incorporated holding company with its own capital structure is much harder to undo.
That's the real significance of Africa Data Hub Holding Limited. MTN isn't just building data centres — it's creating a standalone entity that can raise its own money, sign its own deals, and outlast any single partnership. The UAE backer gets a vehicle; MTN gets infrastructure capacity without carrying the full cost alone; and the continent gets something it has almost never had: a dedicated, institutionalised home for AI-grade computing.
For founders who've been renting compute from Amazon or Google at prices that make serious experimentation unaffordable, the question is whether MTN's 150MW eventually reaches them — or stays priced for the enterprise clients that justify the build.
