MTN and Dubai Partner to Build 150MW AI Data Centres Across Africa
MTN Group has confirmed a partnership with Dubai-based investor Al Ashram to build 150 megawatts of AI-ready data centre infrastructure across Africa, with South Africa and Nigeria as the primary deployment markets. The commitment builds on MTN's Africa Data Hub spinout reported on August 27, adding a named UAE capital partner to the continent's largest AI infrastructure programme by a telecoms operator.
Africa Data Hub: naming Al Ashram changes what this is
A named capital partner with a track record — Tarek Al Ashram co-founded Gulf Data Hub, which KKR backed to build large-scale data centres across the Middle East — is a meaningfully different thing from a headline number.
Africa has seen plenty of announced billions that never broke ground. What's different here is that the UAE side brings operational experience in exactly this asset class, not just a cheque.
The $3–6 billion price tag for 150MW is real money that still needs to be formally committed. But the partner now has a face and a CV. That alone moves this from announcement to something worth watching closely.
