MTN Group has committed to a 150-megawatt first phase of an AI-ready data centre programme, with South Africa and Nigeria identified as the primary deployment markets. The commitment is described as the largest AI infrastructure bet placed by an African telecoms operator to date.

Building hyperscale data centres is brutally capital-intensive, and power is the binding constraint — not land, not fibre. By staying minority, MTN contributes its African footprint and enterprise relationships without betting the balance sheet on a infrastructure race it can't win alone.
The question is whether that same minority position limits how much of the value it actually captures — or whether the real prize was always selling cloud and enterprise services on top of infrastructure someone else built and paid for.
