Dangote Refinery IPO Opens at N2.15 Trillion, Africa's Largest-Ever Listing
The Dangote Refinery IPO, priced at ₦525 per share for a ₦2.15 trillion raise, opened today — Nigeria's largest-ever public listing and a candidate for Africa's largest-ever capital raise. FirstBank and Flutterwave have been confirmed as retail access channels, with a diaspora subscription option also available. Dangote Group is set to retain an 84.34 percent stake following the offer.
Dangote IPO: the private placement investors got here first — and now they're underwater
The loudest number today is ₦2.15 trillion. But the most revealing one is buried in the analyst discussion: private placement investors who bet early are currently sitting roughly 10% below their entry price, locked in for a year, while funding costs run at around 20%.
They backed the refinery before the public got access. The premium they expected never arrived.
So as the IPO opens to retail buyers — drivers, cooks, diaspora subscribers — the people who took the earliest risk are quietly the ones losing ground. That's not a reason to avoid the IPO. But it is a reason to look past the 'Africa's largest listing' headline and ask what the price needs to do, and when, for this to actually pay off.
